Fall arrest lanyards with an in-built fall arrester are designed to absorb the forces of a fall. They comply with their own EN standard, EN 355, and have a maximum length of 2 metres. They are used as fall protection when climbing ladders, masts, scaffolding and the like.

Fall arrest devices, also known as fall arrest lanyards, act as a link between the safety harness and the fall arrest coupling device. Fall arrest devices are not authorised for falling into, but are intended to prevent a fall from occurring. When used for positioning, for example on masts or steep roofs, a fall arrest device must always be used (e.g. a fall arrest block or a fall arrest device).

A support rope has a rope lock that locks automatically under load. Support ropes are often used in industrial service, offshore, pole work and master works.
