Questions and answers on fall protection equipment

  • What is the lifespan of ropes for fall protection?

  • The maximum lifetime of the rope is 15 years but should be discarded after 10 years. Example. Your rope was manufactured in 2014 but has been on a reel, properly packed without risk of moisture and sunlight until 2015. Then your rope should be discarded in 2024. But since you took the rope out in 2015, you can use it until 2025 if the rope is intact.

This is only a potential lifespan. The rope may be destroyed on its first use. It is the inspection that determines whether the rope should be discarded or not. Proper storage of the rope when not in use is important to maintain the life of the rope. All equipment should be inspected before each use and once a year.

    The rope should be discarded earlier if;

    • someone fell into the rope at least 2 metres away.
    • inspection shows damage to the core
    • the sheath is very worn.
    • it has been in contact with active or hazardous chemicals
    • there is the slightest doubt about its safety.
  • What is the lifespan of a fall arrest harness?

  • A fall arrest harness or safety harness should never be used 10 years after the date of manufacture. This is only a potential lifespan as the harness can be destroyed during its first use.

It is the inspection that determines whether the harness should be discarded or not. Proper storage is important to maintain the life of the harness. All equipment should be inspected before each use and once a year.

    The harness should be discarded earlier if;

    • The harness has been involved in falls even though no damage is visible.
    • the textile of the harness has been damaged by abrasion, cutting, chemical agents or similar.
    • the seam has been damaged.
    • the buckles do not work.
    • the harness has been in contact with active or hazardous chemicals.
    • there is the slightest doubt about the safety of the harness.
  • How do I know how old my rope is?

  • To know the age of the rope, look at the batch number. The last two digits tell you the year it was made. Ex. 08 = 2008.

  • Which coupling point on a harness can I use with an SRL block?

  • A full body harness normally has a D-ring in the back for fall arrest (fall arrest points are marked with an 'A'), some models also have a front fall arrest connection point. Either the front or rear fall arrest connection point can be used, however the rear connection is preferred to allow the user to work unhindered from the rope.

  • Should a harness be used over or under winter clothes?

  • A harness should be worn over winter clothing. It is more visible during checks and less likely to be disturbed by twists and automatic hooks. In addition, when the harness is on the outside and a fall occurs and the harness is pulled upwards, there is less risk of the person choking.

  • Is it acceptable to attach your fall protection system to scaffolding?

  • Yes, the scaffold supports the potential load and if the scaffold manufacturer authorises such use, you can connect your fall protection system.

Ensure that your connecting rope has hooks large enough to fully close and lock when connected to the scaffolding (e.g. Connecting rope with scaffolding hook).

Also ensure that the coupling fitting (snap hook) may be used in this direction.

  • What hearing protection should I wear?

  • The maximum permissible sound volume to be exposed to in the workplace is 85 dB.
To calculate the level of attenuation you need on your hearing protectors, do the following:

Noise level in dB - 85 dB = attenuation requirement.
    E.g. 118 dB - 85 dB = 33 dB which gives X3 or X4.

  • I have lost the manual for my fall protection. Can you help me with it?

  • Absolutely! Go into the product and check, we are working to fill each product with relevant manuals. If there is none, you can contact us via chat or email and we will send you the manual in PDF format.

Please have your product close at hand because we will need the model number to find the right one.

If you can't find your product in our range, but it is a brand that we sell, don't hesitate to contact us at info@personligtfallskydd.se. We have access to all manuals.

  • I weigh more than 140kg, is there any equipment for me?

  • Unfortunately, we do not sell equipment that can handle a person weight of more than 140kg. This is because the fall arrestor can only withstand 6 kN. If you weigh more than 140 and fall, the fall can be heavier than that and then the fall arrester or your body will not be able to take the fall.

  • Is the equipment you sell approved by the Swedish Work Environment Authority?

  • All our fall protection products are approved for professional use and comply with European standards. The Swedish Work Environment Authority refers to the standards and norms that exist in the field. Should an inspection take place, they do so on the basis of these.

What determines whether the fall protection is approved is the European standard and therefore all fall protection must have the code EN365. An approved safety harness for professional use must also have the code EN361, which refers to the anchorage points in the harness and that these are approved.

It is therefore not okay to use a harness that is only ANSI approved, for example, as this is an American standard.
