What are guy ropes and what are they used for?

In support rope, also known as positioning line, is a rope with a rope lock that, depending on the model, follows the user either manually or automatically. The rope is used for both support and positioning. If you are working at height, you use the rope to secure your body so that you can have both hands free to perform your work. Our support ropes are easy to adjust and lock automatically under load.

Fall arrest lanyards and their function

Fall prevention guy ropes, or drop stop as they are also known, act as the link between your harness and the fall arrest connector. They are not designed to catch a fall, but to prevent a fall from even happening.

For example, if you are working on a mast or on a steep roof, you will always need an additional fall protection that fall protection block or some form of fall arrestor as well.

Contexts where guy lines are used

Lanyards are mainly used to provide safe positioning and support, allowing you to work with both hands free. They are important in several industries and tasks, such as industrial and maintenance services, working on master, stumps, wind turbine and scaffolding.

They are also used in roof work and other situations where you need stability, free movement and minimise the risk of falling. The self-locking feature of the lanyard allows it to easily follow your movements, but locks instantly when needed to increase safety or prevent an accident.

Different types of couplings for working at height

In a fall arrest system, ropes and fall arrest blocks are what hold the harness and anchorage point together, and contribute to your safety when working at height. The difference between the different attachments is:

  • Supporting rope: Used for positioning and support, it allows the user to work with both hands free while preventing falls.
  • Fall arrest lanyard: Rope with a fall arrest function that reduces the force of a fall. Often used for climbing and moving.
  • Fall protection blocks: Self retracting rope with fall arrestor providing safety and flexibility in a fixed workplace.

Frequently asked questions about guy ropes

  • How do I choose the right support line for my work?

  • Think about the working environment, how far you need to reach and how much wear and tear the rope needs to withstand. A shorter rope works well in confined spaces, while a longer one provides more freedom of movement for larger movements. Also consider durability and whether the rope can be adjusted.

  • Are there weight restrictions for support ropes?

  • Yes, each support line has a specified weight capacity. Always double-check that the line is approved for both the weight of the user and the equipment being carried.

  • How do I use a lifeline safely?

  • The lifeline should always be attached to a stable anchor point. It is also important that it is properly stretched and adjusted, so that you do not risk coming into contact with dangerous edges or falling from a height.

  • Does the lifeline need to be maintained and checked?

  • Yes, it is. Make a habit of checking the condition before each use, preferably according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Clean the rope if it gets dirty, preferably with a soft brush and clean water. When doing so, avoid strong chemicals and acids that can damage the material. If you notice visible damage such as cuts, abrasions, cracks, worn seams or deformations on metal parts, it is time to replace the rope.
