Challenges in temporary workplaces
In temporary workplaces, working conditions can change rapidly. New scaffolding can be erected, ceilings can be opened up, and workers often have to move between different areas where fall risks vary. This means that a flexible and proactive approach to fall protection is necessary.
The temporary nature of these workplaces also makes it more challenging to use passive fall protection such as guardrails and nets, as these may not be as easily installed as in a permanent workplace. In addition, creating safe anchor points for active fall protection can be difficult if the structure is under construction or not stable.
Selection of fall protection equipment
When working in temporary workplaces, it is important to choose the right equipment that is both flexible and adaptable. Here are some recommendations:
- Personal fall protection equipment: Fall arrest harness and fall protection block are essential for workers who need to move freely but still be protected from falls. Ropes and fall arrest blocks with in-built fall stops are particularly useful as they provide mobility without compromising safety.
- Removable anchorage points: When fixed anchorage points are not available, portable alternatives such as mobile anchorage posts or temporary anchors can be used. These can be quickly set up and taken down depending on the location of the work.
- Guardrails and platforms: If possible, use temporary guardrails and work platforms to create a safer working environment. These solutions can usually be moved around and adapted as needed.
