Petzl I’D S – self-braking descender for rope work
The Petzl I’D S is a self-braking descender designed for experienced rope access technicians and professionals working at height. It is used for controlled descent on fixed ropes and can also be used in various rescue systems. The descender is designed for ropes with a diameter of 10–11.5 mm and features several functions that facilitate both use and safe handling.
Anti-panic function and automatic locking
The I’D S is fitted with an anti-panic function that automatically stops the descent if the user pulls too hard on the handle. This function helps to reduce the risk of an uncontrolled descent. The ergonomic handle allows the user to control the speed during descent.
With Petzl’s AUTO-LOCK system, the rope locks automatically when the handle is released. This allows the user to stop and position themselves at a work site without having to tie off the rope or manually lock the descender.
Easy installation and handling
The movable side plate has a safety catch that allows the rope to be fitted whilst the descender is still attached to the harness. Clear markings show how the rope should be positioned, and a fail-safe feature helps to reduce the risk of incorrect installation.
The I’D S has two possible lowering modes, in which the rope either runs over the side plate or through a V-shaped friction channel.
The descent device can also be used when moving across sloping or horizontal terrain.
Designed for work and rescue operations
The I’D S has a maximum working load of 140 kg for one person.
In rescue operations involving two people, the descent device can be used with loads of up to 250 kg. Under specific conditions, using an 11 mm NFPA-certified General Use rope*, the load can be as high as 272 kg.
Once the rope is locked, the user can retrieve the rope without operating the handle. This makes it possible to use the descender in reversible lift systems or for shorter ascents.
The movable side plate can also be locked in place with a screw, which means that the I’D S can be integrated into existing rescue systems.
Durable construction
The descender has a stainless steel wear plate which reinforces the area where the rope runs and is subject to friction.
For additional control during descent, the I’D S can be fitted with an open or closed auxiliary brake, depending on the load and rope diameter.
*NFPA is a US regulatory framework setting out requirements for, amongst other things, rescue equipment. The ‘General Use’ classification is used for equipment intended for higher loads in technical rescue operations. An example of such a rope is the Petzl BEAM 11 mm.
