How does a fall arrest block work?
A fall arrest block has a wire or strap that automatically rolls in and out of the block housing (much like a car seat belt). In the event of a fall, the block locks in a flash and stops you in a short distance. This reduces the free fall height, which is crucial when working at low heights.
When should you choose blocks instead of fall arrestors?
- In case of limited headroom (you have no room for long braking distances)
- When you want to move freely without dragging excess rope
- In vertical environments such as ladders, masts or towers
- For repetitive work where the rope has to be pulled out and back many times
Tips for choosing a block:
- Check if the block is approved for horizontal use if it is to be used over the edge
- Choose the right length (too short a line limits your movement, too long can be unnecessarily heavy)
